How to Best Prepare for your Merkaba Retreat
Preparing for a sacred earth medicine retreat is an essential part of the process. The time leading up to your retreat can significantly impact your experience, both physically and mentally. By preparing your mind, body, and spirit, you can ensure that you are ready to receive the healing and transformation that plant medicine can offer. Here are some practical and spiritual steps to guide you in your preparation:
1. Set Clear Intentions
The most powerful earth medicine journeys are those where you have a clear and heartfelt intention. What do you hope to achieve or understand through your experience? It could be emotional healing, spiritual awakening, self-discovery, or gaining clarity on a particular issue in your life.
2. Follow Dietary Guidelines (Pre-Retreat Diet)
A fish and/or plant-based diet that’s simple and clean is often recommended before attending a plant medicine retreat. Many medicines, like Psilocybin, Kambo, and Bufo, interact with the body and mind in a profound way, and a healthy diet supports this interaction.
3. Clear Your Mind (Mental Preparation)
A sacred medicine journey can often bring up intense emotions, memories, and realizations. Preparing your mind can help you stay grounded and open during the experience.
4. Emotional Preparation: Release Fear and Anxiety
It’s natural to feel some fear or anxiety before a sacred medicine experience, especially if it’s your first time. Being emotionally prepared means confronting and releasing those fears, which allows the sacred medicine to guide you through the experience.
5. Prepare Your Space and Environment
A retreat environment plays a significant role in your healing. It’s essential to prepare yourself for the sacred space you’ll be entering and the ceremony setting.
Physical Preparation: Get Rest and Relax
Physical well-being is essential for the healing process. The more relaxed, rested, and rejuvenated your body is before the retreat, the better you will be able to receive the medicine and handle any physical detox symptoms that might arise.
Trust the Process and Let Go
Ultimately, the most important aspect of preparing for a sacred medicine retreat is to surrender and trust the process. It’s common for people to come with a desire for a specific outcome or insight, but the true power of plant medicine often lies in its ability to show you what you most need to see, rather than what you expect to see.
In Summary: Preparing for a Sacred Earth Medicine Retreat
By preparing holistically—physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually—you can ensure that you are ready to fully engage in your healing journey at the retreat.

1. Set Clear Intentions
The most powerful earth medicine journeys are those where you have a clear and heartfelt intention. What do you hope to achieve or understand through your experience? It could be emotional healing, spiritual awakening, self-discovery, or gaining clarity on a particular issue in your life.
- Reflect on Your Goals: Take time to meditate or journal about why you’re attending the retreat. Ask yourself what you wish to heal, release, or manifest.
- Be Open: While having an intention is helpful, also be open to what the medicine reveals. Sometimes, the medicine will show you what you need, not necessarily what you think you want.
- Write Your Intentions Down: Write down your intentions and keep them in a place where you can see them daily. This helps you stay focused on your goals throughout the preparation process and during the retreat itself.
- Avoid Heavy, Processed Foods: Leading up to your retreat, avoid alcohol, caffeine, sugar, processed foods, and meats. These foods can clog your energy and affect the clarity of your experience.
- Eat Light and Fish/Plant-Based: Aim to eat light, fish/plant-based meals such as fish, shrimp, fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, and seeds. This helps cleanse your body and prepares it to receive the medicine.
- No Dairy or Gluten: In the days leading up to your retreat, avoid dairy and gluten, which can create digestive sluggishness or inflammation.
- Hydrate: Drink plenty of coconut water before, during, and after your retreat. Staying hydrated helps to keep the energy flowing smoothly in your body and aids in the physical detox process.
- Avoid Mind-Altering Substances: Refrain from using alcohol, drugs, or other substances in the weeks leading up to the retreat. These can cloud your mind and interfere with the healing process. You must be totally sober from drugs, alcohol, nicotine, and certain prescription drugs (our intake team and your doctor will assist you in determining which prescription drugs you must stop in preparation for and during the retreat). If you are a recovering addict, you must have at least 3 months of continuous sobriety in order to attend our retreats. We do not offer drug/alcohol detox services; however, we can connect you to the right people if this is something you need.
3. Clear Your Mind (Mental Preparation)
A sacred medicine journey can often bring up intense emotions, memories, and realizations. Preparing your mind can help you stay grounded and open during the experience.
- Practice Mindfulness: Engage in daily mindfulness or meditation practices. This helps you cultivate inner stillness, focus, and awareness, which will help you stay present during your ceremony.
- Embrace Letting Go: Sacred medicine is often about surrendering control and letting go of old beliefs, patterns, and fears. Practice releasing attachment to outcomes or expectations, allowing the medicine to work in its own way.
- Mental Cleansing: You can also engage in mental cleansing practices such as journaling, writing letters of forgiveness (to yourself or others), or letting go of negative thought patterns. This helps you release mental and emotional baggage.
4. Emotional Preparation: Release Fear and Anxiety
It’s natural to feel some fear or anxiety before a sacred medicine experience, especially if it’s your first time. Being emotionally prepared means confronting and releasing those fears, which allows the sacred medicine to guide you through the experience.
- Acknowledge Your Fears: Take time to identify any fears or worries you may have about the retreat or the medicine itself. Whether it’s fear of the unknown, fear of losing control, or fear of what may arise emotionally, write these down and confront them.
- Release Old Emotional Patterns: If you’re holding onto any old wounds, resentment, or grief, begin working through them. Consider doing some self-compassion practices, therapy, or inner work to help you heal before your retreat.
- Trust the Process: Understand that the medicine is there to help you, and trust that you will be held and supported by the facilitators, the group, and the sacred space created. Remember that everything you experience is part of your unique healing journey.
5. Prepare Your Space and Environment
A retreat environment plays a significant role in your healing. It’s essential to prepare yourself for the sacred space you’ll be entering and the ceremony setting.
- Create Sacred Space: Before you leave for the retreat, take time to clean and organize your living space. This will help you create a fresh, calm, and clear energy around you.
- Disconnect from Distractions: Prepare to be fully present at the retreat. Disconnect from technology, work, and social media. Give yourself the space and freedom to go inward.
- Create a Peaceful Mindset Engage in activities that foster peace and relaxation. Take walks in nature, practice yoga, or indulge in light creative activities like art or writing. This will help you clear your mind and set the stage for a deeply restful and reflective retreat.
Physical Preparation: Get Rest and Relax
Physical well-being is essential for the healing process. The more relaxed, rested, and rejuvenated your body is before the retreat, the better you will be able to receive the medicine and handle any physical detox symptoms that might arise.
- Rest and Recharge: Get plenty of sleep in the days leading up to the retreat. A rested body and mind will be more prepared to integrate the healing energy of the medicine.
- Gentle Movement: Incorporate light exercises such as yoga, walking, or stretching to get your energy moving and prepare your body to hold the powerful medicine energies.
- Detox: If possible, consider doing a gentle detox such as fasting or a cleanse before your retreat to release any toxins from your body. This can help you feel lighter and more open to receiving healing.
- Trust Your Facilitators: Trust that the facilitators and shamanic practitioners at the retreat center are there to guide you safely through the process. They will ensure you have the right support, whether through ceremony, integration, or aftercare.
- Trust the Medicine: The sacred medicine knows you better than you know yourself. Open your heart, release your expectations, and trust that the experience will unfold exactly as it’s meant to.
